[What he takes her for? It's a good question, he sometimes still doesn't know the answer himself. Now is one of those times. A time in which part of him wishes she was still him even if generally he doesn't really make a difference between them, except that if she hadn't been a girl he probably wouldn't have cared so much or things would have been different enough for those times to not happen. A time in which part of him wishes she just didn't care and didn't bother to get involved with anything. A time in which he almost wishes he had never met her. He always regret those times right as soon as they happen, whether he likes it or not she's too important for him now. That may be why what she says bothers him that much as well, because he can't just brush those things off as much as he wants.
