Character

Name: Keiichi Maebara
Fandom: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai
Gender: Male
Age: 16 17 18
Time Period: End of Matsuribayashi-hen, the last arc of Kai. Rika is saved from being murdered and there are no other deaths. Everyone attends the festival in peace and they get past the month of June.
Wing Color: Light red with ice blue tips.
History: Wikipedia, Keiichi's Wikia article; if this doesn't suffice I can elaborate.

Personality: Keiichi is just your average teenager boy, there's nothing in him that would stand up for attention at first. It takes someone to get to know him to actually "see" what Keiichi really is, it's not that he's a reserved boy or that he hides himself. It's a simple matter of him being exactly what he seems, normal, average, until the situation actually requires him to show what he's truly made off.

Known as the "Magician of Words", Keiichi has a special talent when speaking, not only can he be elaborate when he so desires, but he has the skill to transmit exactly what he feels to others. He can bring over his sadness or his will to fight, to even the hardest listeners and those with a closed heart. A natural leader that only takes that position when he sees it's needed for him to, Keiichi is a charismatic being capable of drawing close to him other people and to break through old senseless resentments. He's full of energy and live, always ready to share a smile with his friends and have fun playing games. Not a man to back off from a challenge, Keiichi always moves head on towards anything that presents itself against him, be it a mere game or a friend being in problems. He values his friends greatly and would do anything for them and to protect them, including from themselves.

Keiichi is like any other healthy teenager boy, which means that he often has "perverted" thoughts about his friends, specially when it's about deciding the punishment of losing a game. He never acts upon most of those thoughts, contenting himself with just imagining or watching his friends in whatever clothes they ended in, much like they do with him when he's the one losing a game. Keiichi has a great respect for women, though, normally using his most perverted ideas to merely tease his friends (who are all female in fact). He dislikes anyone who takes advantage of girls in any given way, even when he's at a place where girls are dressed as sexy maids, he doesn't hesitate to jump in their defense if any man tries crosses the line he mentally has drawn over that theme. In his eyes people who take advantage of girls in any way are nothing but low scum against whom he has no problems going to defend his friends or any girl he sees mistreated. Keiichi is a protector, honorable and trustworthy. He values friendship and the bonds between people over anything else and deems stupid and pointless any traditions or old rules that make people suffer, specially if those rules are assumed and bot written. He's an intelligent young man with an hyperactive imagination who loves to have fun with his friends and play tons of games.

This is the Keiichi Maebara he has always wanted to be. A Keiichi, he only got to know after moving to Hinamizawa. However, that Keiichi isn't the complete one, and is nothing like the old one.

Before his arrival to Hinamizawa, Keiichi was very different. He wasn't just an average teenager boy, he was, in fact, a mediocre teenager boy. With mediocre athletic skills, mediocre artistic skills and mediocre grades, Keiichi was the kind of guy who ended alone because he lacked anything that would attract people to him. His classmates ignored him, because who wants to be with a mediocre guy? And meanwhile, his parents and professors ushered him to take things more seriously and improve his grades. But they always did it in the same way one checks the time, carelessly, without paying any real attention to him. His family life was almost non-existent, his father went his own way, so did his mother, and all Keiichi was left with was a mediocre self. Until he discovered that he had a gift for studying, it wasn't a skill he appreciated personally, but still it was something in which he was talented and thus, trying to get out of the suffocating mediocrity of his life, Keiichi improved on it.

Keiichi became less mediocre and more outstanding, his intelligence attracted people's attention and praises from his professors and parents. And his ego grew with them. Keiichi moved from looking at the athletic students with jealousy to look at them with a sneer from the classroom window, finding them stupid and worthless. He became successful and he became addicted to it, always aiming to be the best despite it being a skill he didn't like, if it earned him praises he would aim to get to the top. He became anti-social, while before his classmates ignored him, it ended being Keiichi himself who distanced himself from his classmates and everyone else, too focused in trying to success and earn more praises. But as his grades kept rising, they stopped being a novelty and praises turned to be less often while people still demanded higher results, or maybe it was simply that Keiichi himself got accustomed to the praises and they weren't enough for him anymore.

The stress of the life-style he had chosen by pursuing a skill he initially disliked, began to accumulate until it exploded. His sneering towards other people turned into complete disdain, he stopped seeing people as worthless beings and instead began to consider them toys for his enjoyment, for him to release the stress accumulated. Soon enough, he ended shooting young girls with a model gun he acquired, finding release in the cruelty of the act and the suffering of the children. Their suffering, their fear, all of it turned to be a better incentive than praises and the arrogance he earned from those grew up even more at the idea that he wouldn't be caught, seeing people confused and trying to protect their children but unable to even get close to the idea of who was the responsible. Keiichi got swallowed into a spiral created by his own hands, trying to get the attention he starved for through something he didn't like and that ended not being as rewarding as he expected, becoming a worse person with each passing day and each child he assaulted.

Until the spiral reached its climax, and Keiichi shot a small girl in the air. It was then, for the first time in a long time, that Keiichi regained his senses, probably since he discovered his talent at studying. He realized what he was doing exactly and how it was wrong in too many ways to enumerate, he became aware of how he was and how that person wasn't the one he had wanted to be. The guilt Keiichi suffers from the events of that time can't be erased in just one life, the shame and hate he feels against himself is his reason to be how he is now, trying to be the Keiichi he wanted to be, a Keiichi that would protect and not hurt, that would have friends and not regard everyone as worthless of his time or toys. There's not a day in which Keiichi is haunted by what he did, even when the law's and his parents' punishments passed, he himself hasn't forgiven himself and would, without a doubt, beat himself senseless if he could go back to the beginning of everything. It's his strong will and his wish to note give up what keeps him going on instead of allowing guilt to devour him. The energy he used to become the best student and later the best shooter, is now used in becoming the best friend and person he can be, trying to amend his errors and learn how life has to be with games and friends.

Strengths:

Mental: Normally Keiichi is a person who feeds his strengths with his weaknesses, it's his guilty feeling what leads him through life and has him aiming for the best. Keiichi has strong convictions and a clear sense of what's good and bad, thanks to his own experiences. He's rather intelligent, specially when he aims for it, and is capable of keeping his head cool normally, no matter what the situation is. His strong and firm will and determination are what allow him to go on with his life and do his best to not fail his friends. Keiichi shows a great mental strength in normal conditions, being able to cope with the immense feeling of guilt inside of him and not letting it devour him.
Physical: Keiichi is rather average in terms of athletic skills, however he's quite strong in muscular matters. Capable of breaking free from being restrained by his friends in the first arc of Higurashi, Keiichi can become highly dangerous with a blunt weapon, generally being a baseball bat that belonged to Satoko's brother. In the first arc of Higurashi, Keiichi is capable of beating to death both Rena and Mion, leaving their corpses in little more than a recognizable state. In the third arc, he beats to death an adult man with relative ease, and in the second to last arc of Higurashi Kai he's seen taking down a trained adult man with his bat (though in this attack the surprise factor played an important role, the fact the adult was knocked unconscious serves to determine the strength Keiichi used).
Emotional: Keiichi is a caring person, he cares a lot for his friends and is ready to do anything for them, being the first to give up his own life to allow his friends more time to run away in the second to last arc of Higurashi. His bonds with his friends drive a great part of his life since he moved to Hinamizawa, and he does his best to correspond those bonds, it's because of that that he never steps back from trying to help Satoko when her uncle arrives and starts to abuse her, no matter the consequences. It's probably those bonds, and his inner wish to be able to keep them and treasure them forever, are what gives Keiichi the power to create miracles on his own, reaching to others' hearts and even being able to recall events of other worlds. The capacity to remember fragments of the events of the first arc of Higurashi allow Keiichi to, despite the confusion over those dreams or hallucinations, remain stable emotionally and mentally and avoid the same mistakes he did in that world.

Weaknesses:

Mental: In the strengths section the world "normally" has been used often, the reason being that Keiichi, like most of the inhabitants ot Hinamizawa, has a mental illness that throws through the window everything set in his personality in normal conditions. Under great pressure or stress, Keiichi cracks like crystal, this also works if he feels highly threatened, be it a threat to himself or to his friends (from whom he would do anything, even kill if the stress cracks him). He gets wary easily, feeling chased and trapped. Under this circumstances, he's nothing like his normal self. The guilty he normally lives with becomes a great burden, adding to the feeling of being constantly accused. He becomes unable to trust others, even his friends, finding any secret they may have from him as something meant to keep him ignorant of something bad that they plan to do to him. He becomes forgetful and is unable to recognize things he should know (like in the first arc of Higurashi, he knows Dr. Irie is referred as the director, yet when Rena and Mion talk about him, Keiichi's mind doesn't register it as a known term). In this state he's prone to rage fits, making him highly dangerous in many senses.
Physical: Despite his strength, specially when using a blunt weapon, Keiichi isn't beyond average in physical terms. He has no special talent in athletics, just being good enough to pass the P.E. classes. Keiichi is just a normal human, fragile as any other average person, bullets will pierce his skin and kill him, same with strong blows.
Emotional: There's not a single day in which Keiichi doesn't remember and repent for the sins he has done. Though he tries his best to not let the guilt overpower him and devour him, he can't always supress it. The memory of what he did chases him every time he's with his friends, afraid of them discovering his guilt and shunning him for it, afraid of himself going back to that self he loathes and that would hurt his friends. His constant worry makes him unable to fully enjoy his life in Hinamizawa, no matter how perfect it is. It also blinds him to his friends' problems until they are glaring at him in the eye, just like how he misses Rena being mostly faking that she's happy and fine, even when he does get an impression that she is he quickly dismisses it. Though the bonds he shares with his friends give him a great emotional strength, they also give him a great weakness and fear of losing them. Because of this, it's not entirely hard at times to convince him that the bonds are fake and his friends are lying to him, merely using him, as seen in the first Higurashi arc, where he was told he was mostly like a substitute of Satoko's brother, about whom no one had said a thing, which slowly together with other things drove him to madness.
